About Me
My love of creating stems from an early exploration of everyday objects around me… a treasured first memory, discovering endless beauty & combinations in my mum, Anne’s, button box.
My route into making jewellery & creating my own Jewellery Brand was not usual, typical or straightforward. I didn’t study Art, instead preferring the life experience of a self-taught artist. After leaving school, while working in hospitality/retail, I learnt basic jewellery-making techniques, deconstructing flea-market finds.
Just after the millennium, the pull to Devon was too great. My lucky break came when my Devon family offered me their attic room. With this idyllic base, soon after moving from Epping to Totnes, Devon, it wasn’t long before my work got noticed & I had the opportunity to launch my own business & open my first shop… The Studio. at the Cider Press, Dartington. Where my passion for wearable, natural, timeless jewellery created all the demand I now enjoy.
I currently have a wonderful team of workshops that help me create my unusual designs: expert casters, CAD designers & bespoke mounters.
People often ask about my influences, and they are varied… yet all help me develop my distinctive Kate style. I have a special affinity with the different qualities of gemstones & precious metals. Resulting in natural, contemporary, top-end, unique work, yet with a timeless, almost historical feel. Visiting museums & being in nature are my happy places, and my best design work often follows.
A few longstanding gemstone suppliers are now my friends & help source my stones… it’s actually a joy, and more like the gemstones are choosing me. I like to work with natural gemstones, sometimes completely raw, flawed & unpolished… maybe their natural colours, flaws & imperfections… just like in nature/or a button box… are the stars.
